I have an unquenchable quest for melodious poetry. But after my bountiful book purchases at Charlton Heston’s estate sale in Beverly Hills in January of 2016, I should be content for quite awhile (Heston had died in 2008, but his 92-year-old wife Lydia had just put the house and its contents up for sale). Out of the 15 books I purchased, 10 were poetry compilations. My favorite is Poetry Speaks, which includes 3 CDs of poets reading from their own works! |
Mark Strand, U.S. Poet Laureate, 1990-1991, who gave a poetry reading in Los Angeles that I attended a few years before his death in 2014, aptly expresses my love of poetry in the first lines of his poem, Eating Poetry:
Ink runs from the corners of my mouth. There is no happiness like mine. I have been eating poetry.
